MIFF 2026 Celebrates Global Story-telling Through Powerful Cinema
Three internationally acclaimed films exploring themes of identity, acceptance, mental health and human connection captivated audiences at the 19th Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) 2026 , reaffirming the festival's growing reputation as a premier global platform for documentary, animation and short-fiction cinema.
Screened as part of the festival's much-anticipated Mid Fest programme , "Eeny, Meeny, Miny, Moe!" , "Hyena" and "I Love You, I Leave You" offered powerful and emotionally resonant narratives that reflected contemporary social concerns while showcasing diverse cinematic voices from around the world.
The screenings come amid a landmark edition of MIFF, which has brought together 346 films from 46 countries after receiving an impressive 1,459 entries from 47 nations . Organised by the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC), MIFF remains South Asia's oldest and largest festival dedicated to non-feature films.
The first film, "Eeny, Meeny, Miny, Moe!" , follows Yios, a mythical boy whose sun-like head makes him an outsider among children in the clouds. After falling to Earth, an unexpected friendship helps him discover acceptance and belonging. Directed by acclaimed Slovak animator Andrea Szelesová , the film uses imaginative visuals and heartfelt storytelling to address childhood loneliness, exclusion and empathy. The film made its international premiere at MIFF and was represented by layout and background artist Andrea Arce .
The second screening, "Hyena" , marked its Indian premiere. Directed by Altay Ulan Yang , the Mandarin-language short fiction thriller examines bullying, peer pressure and the dangerous allure of group behaviour. Inspired by the filmmaker's own experiences, the film follows a former bullying victim who joins a dominant group of boys, only to become complicit in acts of cruelty against a vulnerable newcomer. The story serves as a stark reflection on mob mentality and the erosion of individual morality.
Closing the segment was "I Love You, I Leave You" , an award-winning documentary by Swiss filmmaker Moris Freiburghaus . The film chronicles the journey of Swiss musician Dino Brandao as he struggles to remain true to himself in a society that often demands conformity. Winner of the Golden Eye for Best Documentary and the Audience Award at the Zurich Film Festival, the documentary explores self-expression, mental health and personal freedom through a blend of cinematic storytelling and intimate observation.
Together, the three films highlighted a common thread—the universal search for belonging and self-acceptance. Their selection also reflects broader trends in contemporary world cinema, where stories centred on emotional well-being, social inclusion and individuality are gaining increasing prominence.
Beyond the screenings, MIFF 2026 has distinguished itself through its expanded WAVES Doc Bazaar , international participation and focus on emerging technologies such as AI, VR, AR and immersive storytelling . With a ₹55 lakh prize pool , international competition entries and industry networking opportunities, this year's festival has evolved into far more than a showcase of films. It has become a vibrant global hub for creative exchange, innovation and collaboration, making MIFF 2026 one of the most dynamic editions in the festival's history.
