Milad-un-Nabi Holiday Revised in Andhra Pradesh, Now on August 26

The Andhra Pradesh government has revised the date of the public holiday for Milad-un-Nabi, moving it from August 25 to August 26, 2026, following a change in the festival date based on the lunar calendar.

The General Administration (Political-B) Department issued an order on August 20, partially modifying its earlier notification that had declared August 25 a holiday. The previous order, issued in December 2025, had listed August 25 as the holiday for Milad-un-Nabi.

The revision was made after the Andhra Pradesh State Waqf Board informed the government that the crescent moon marking the beginning of Rabi-ul-Awwal was not sighted on August 12.

As the Islamic calendar follows the lunar cycle, the absence of the crescent moon resulted in a change in the date of the festival. The Waqf Board subsequently informed the state government that Milad-un-Nabi, observed on the 12th day of Rabi-ul-Awwal, will be celebrated on August 26 this year.

After examining the Waqf Board’s report and request, the government decided to shift the holiday notified under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, from August 25 to August 26.

The government will also issue a revised notification in the Andhra Pradesh Extraordinary Gazette to formally incorporate the change and partially amend the earlier government orders.

The revised holiday will apply to the relevant government offices and institutions covered under the holiday notification.
