Mild 3.1-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar
A mild earthquake measuring 3.1 on the Richter scale struck Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district late Monday night, November 2, with officials reporting no casualties or damage to property.
According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake occurred at 10:56:24 pm IST at a shallow depth of 5 km. The epicenter was located in Kishtwar district at latitude 33.292 degrees north and longitude 75.893 degrees east.
The seismic event was recorded approximately 95 km east-northeast of Katra, providing a geographical reference for its location. The NCS subsequently listed the earthquake as a reviewed event in its seismic records.
The tremor was classified as a minor earthquake, with its magnitude indicating relatively low seismic energy compared with stronger earthquakes. However, the effects of an earthquake also depend on factors such as its depth, distance from populated areas and local geological conditions.
A shallow earthquake occurs relatively close to the Earth's surface and can sometimes produce noticeable shaking in nearby areas. Nevertheless, the impact of a tremor depends on several factors, and magnitude alone does not determine the extent of damage.
Officials said no reports of loss of life or damage to property had been received from anywhere in the Union Territory at the time of filing the report.
The NCS, which monitors seismic activity across the country, confirmed the earthquake's magnitude, depth and geographical coordinates. The information was also shared through its official communication channels.
The incident comes as a reminder of the seismic activity in the Himalayan region, where earthquakes of varying magnitudes are recorded periodically. However, the latest tremor did not result in any reported casualties or property damage.
