Mirabai Chanu Set to Lead India's Weightlifting Charge at Glasgow Commonwealth Games

India's hopes of continuing its rich legacy in Commonwealth Games weightlifting will once again rest on the shoulders of Mirabai Chanu , who is set to spearhead the country's campaign at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games , beginning on July 23 . The two time Commonwealth Games champion returns as India's biggest medal prospect, carrying with her years of experience and an impressive record on the international stage.

Competing in the women's 48kg category , Mirabai will be aiming to add another chapter to her remarkable Commonwealth Games journey. The celebrated weightlifter already boasts three Commonwealth Games medals , including two golds and one silver , making her one of India's most successful athletes at the event.

India's women's squad also features experienced campaigners Bindyarani Devi in the 58kg category and Harjinder Kaur in the 69kg category . Both lifters won silver medals at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games and will be looking to convert those podium finishes into gold in Glasgow.

The women's contingent is further strengthened by Gyaneshwari Yadav (53kg) , Sanjana (77kg) and Martina Devi (+86kg) , giving India a balanced mix of established performers and emerging talent.

On the men's side, Lovepreet Singh , who secured a bronze medal in Birmingham 2022 , will lead the challenge in the +110kg category . He will be joined by promising debutants Rishikanta Singh (60kg) , Ajaya Babu (79kg) and Dilbag Singh (94kg) , while M Raja will compete in the 65kg division . The squad represents a blend of youth and experience as India seeks to maintain its dominance in the sport.

The weightlifting competition will be held from July 26 to 30 at the SEC Armadillo in Glasgow. Before reaching Scotland, the Indian contingent will undergo a conditioning camp in Birmingham , departing on Sunday to fine tune preparations ahead of the Games.

India enters the competition with an outstanding record in Commonwealth Games weightlifting. The country topped the discipline's medal table in both Gold Coast 2018 and Birmingham 2022 . At the 2018 edition, Indian lifters claimed nine medals, including five gold , while they followed it up with 10 medals, including three gold , four years later.

With proven champions, rising stars and a history of delivering on the Commonwealth stage, India will once again be among the strongest contenders in Glasgow. As the campaign begins, all eyes will be on Mirabai Chanu , whose leadership and consistency could inspire another memorable medal haul for the country.
