Mobile Phone Hidden in Bottle Recovered From Kannur Central Jail, Probe Targets Smuggling Network
A mobile phone concealed inside a bottle recovered during a surprise inspection at Kannur Central Jail has triggered a detailed police probe into suspected contraband smuggling networks and repeated security lapses inside the prison system.
Police said the Kannur Town Police registered a case on the complaint of the Prison Department after jail officials carried out an inspection on Saturday afternoon. The case has been booked under the Kerala Prisons and Correctional Services (Management) Act for the illegal possession of electronic communication devices inside prison premises .
During the search near the fifth block and a newly constructed toilet , officials noticed a patch of freshly dug earth. On digging, they recovered a bottle containing a mobile phone, SIM card, earphones, charging cable, and power bank , suggesting a planned attempt to enable external communication from within the jail.
Although inmates were questioned immediately after the seizure, authorities were unable to identify the person responsible, pointing to possible coordination between inmates and outside handlers. No arrests have been made so far.
Investigators are now focusing on SIM card usage data, IMEI tracking, digital forensic analysis, and CCTV footage review to trace how the device entered the high-security facility and whether it was actively used for communication or coordination. Officials have not reported any breakthrough yet.
The incident adds to a growing pattern of mobile phone and narcotics recoveries inside Kannur Central Jail , raising concerns over the effectiveness of internal security checks and prison monitoring systems in Kerala.
Security experts note that such cases across India indicate increasingly sophisticated smuggling methods inside correctional facilities , often involving concealed containers, buried parcels, and coordinated delivery networks.
Authorities said a broader review of jail security protocols is underway as the investigation continues.
