Modi and Meloni Set New Longevity Benchmarks in India and Italy

The leadership records of Narendra Modi and Giorgia Meloni highlight two very different forms of political longevity. Meloni’s 1,413 consecutive days in office have made her government the longest uninterrupted administration in Italy’s postwar history, while Modi’s 4,399 days have made him India’s longest-serving elected prime minister in consecutive tenure.

Meloni, who became prime minister on October 22, 2022, surpassed Silvio Berlusconi’s second government, which lasted 1,412 days from 2001 to 2005. Before her, only four Italian governments had exceeded 1,000 days: Berlusconi’s fourth government with 1,287 days, Bettino Craxi’s first with 1,093, and Matteo Renzi’s with 1,024, alongside Berlusconi II. Italy’s record is especially notable because its postwar politics have been characterised by coalition disputes, fragmented parties and frequent government changes. Meloni’s ability to keep Brothers of Italy, Forza Italia and the League together has therefore been central to her achievement.

Her longevity has also been supported by a pragmatic governing approach. She has maintained close relations with European institutions, backed Ukraine, pursued fiscal discipline and combined restrictive action on irregular migration with expanded legal work permits. However, critics say limited progress on structural reforms, productivity and living standards could test her record ahead of the 2027 election.

Modi’s record is longer and reflects a different political system. He surpassed Jawaharlal Nehru’s previous record of 4,398 consecutive days as an elected prime minister on June 10, 2026. Since taking office in 2014, Modi has won three successive national elections, giving him sustained electoral continuity on a scale unmatched by other Indian prime ministers.

The comparison is therefore revealing. Meloni’s milestone is primarily a record of coalition stability in a historically volatile parliamentary system, whereas Modi’s reflects repeated electoral mandates and uninterrupted executive leadership.

Together, their records underline how political durability can emerge through different routes: coalition management and pragmatic positioning in Italy, versus electoral dominance and successive mandates in India. Both leaders now face the harder test turning longevity into lasting policy outcomes and durable institutional and economic transformation nationwide.
