In a significant step towards rebuilding momentum in one of the world's most important strategic partnerships, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump have directed officials from both countries to expedite negotiations for a balanced, mutually beneficial and commercially meaningful trade agreement .

The decision emerged from wide-ranging discussions held on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France, marking the first face-to-face meeting between the two leaders in 16 months. The talks carried added significance as India and the United States seek to overcome recent strains in bilateral relations and restore confidence across trade, technology, defence and strategic cooperation .

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) , both leaders expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far in negotiations on an interim bilateral trade agreement and instructed their teams to work towards finalising a meaningful deal at the earliest.

The meeting also underscored the broader strength of the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership , with both sides reaffirming their commitment to expanding cooperation across multiple sectors. Officials noted that discussions covered defence collaboration, emerging technologies, energy security and commercial engagement , reflecting the increasingly multidimensional nature of the relationship.

A key development following the meeting is the planned visit of US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer to India next week. The visit is expected to provide fresh momentum to negotiations and help bridge remaining differences in the proposed trade pact.

Prime Minister Modi recalled his previous meeting with Trump in Washington and highlighted how that engagement had injected fresh energy into bilateral ties. The two leaders also reviewed progress under the India-US COMPACT (Catalysing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce and Technology) initiative, which aims to deepen cooperation in critical sectors and drive long-term strategic collaboration.

Beyond trade, regional security issues also featured prominently in the discussions. Modi appreciated Trump's efforts towards easing tensions in West Asia and emphasised the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz , a crucial route for global energy supplies and international commerce. He also stressed the need to ensure the safety of seafarers amid ongoing regional instability.

The meeting comes after a challenging phase in India-US relations , marked by tariff disputes , disagreements over remarks concerning the 2025 India-Pakistan military confrontation , immigration policy changes and increased H1B visa fees . However, recent diplomatic efforts by both sides indicate a shared determination to move beyond these differences.

The renewed push for a trade agreement and the broader emphasis on strategic cooperation suggest that New Delhi and Washington are seeking not merely to repair ties but to elevate them to a new level, reinforcing a partnership that remains central to economic growth, regional stability and global geopolitical dynamics .
