Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami has announced his retirement from Test cricket, bringing the curtain down on a distinguished 13-year career in the longest format. The 36-year-old, however, will continue playing white-ball cricket, keeping the door open for further appearances in India's limited-overs setup.

Shami announced his decision through an emotional Instagram post on Friday, November 6, exactly 13 years after making his Test debut against the West Indies at Kolkata's Eden Gardens.

He finished his Test career with 229 wickets from 64 matches at an average of 27.71, including six five-wicket hauls. His ability to generate pace, seam movement and reverse swing, particularly with the older ball, made him one of India's most dependable fast bowlers across conditions.

"Test cricket is not just a format for me, it is a very special part of my life. Today I am deciding to retire from Test cricket with a heavy heart and unlimited beautiful memories," Shami wrote.

Among his most memorable performances were his spells in South Africa. During India's 2018 tour, he produced figures of 5/28 in the second innings of the Johannesburg Test, helping India secure a consolation victory. On the subsequent tour, he took eight wickets in the opening Test at Centurion.

Shami also played a significant role in India's overseas campaigns, establishing himself as a key member of the pace attack alongside his fellow fast bowlers.

His final Test appearance came in the 2023 World Test Championship final against Australia at The Oval, where India finished runners-up. Injuries and fitness concerns subsequently disrupted his international career, and he was last part of India's national team during the 2025 Champions Trophy.

Despite stepping away from the red-ball format, Shami has made it clear that his cricketing journey is far from over. He intends to continue featuring in white-ball competitions, including domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League.
