
Monsoon Push Begins: Heavy Rain in West Bengal, Gusty Winds in Delhi and Rajasthan
Delhi, Rajasthan and West Bengal witnessed contrasting weather patterns on Friday as rainfall, thunderstorms and fluctuating temperatures marked a widespread pre-monsoon spell across northern and eastern India.
In Delhi , residents woke up to cloudy skies and windy conditions after overnight rain brought a sharp dip in temperatures. Safdarjung recorded a minimum of 22.8°C , 5.2 degrees below normal , while Palam, Lodhi Road, Ridge and Ayanagar also reported notable drops of up to 8 degrees compared to the previous day. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast thunderstorms, light rain, lightning and gusty winds of 40–50 kmph through the day. Safdarjung recorded 11.2 mm rainfall in 24 hours. The air quality remained in the “satisfactory” category (AQI 93) . Meteorologists attributed the weather activity to a cyclonic circulation over central Pakistan and adjoining areas, with pre-monsoon showers expected to intensify across Delhi-NCR, Haryana and Punjab in the coming days.
Rajasthan saw a mix of relief and heat . Light to moderate rain and thunderstorms were reported in parts of eastern and western regions, along with gusty winds . However, isolated pockets continued to experience heatwave conditions and warm nights . Sri Ganganagar recorded the highest rainfall at 52 mm , while Jaisalmer touched 46°C , making it the hottest place in the state. Alwar recorded the lowest minimum temperature at 19.5°C .
In West Bengal, the advancing monsoon brought relief from humid conditions in southern districts. The IMD forecast thunderstorms and rain across Kolkata and nearby districts , while heavy showers are likely in sub-Himalayan regions till June 15. Malda and Haldia recorded 66 mm rainfall each , followed by Bardhaman, Bankura and Jhargram. The weather office said conditions remain favourable for further monsoon advancement into the state over the next two to three days.
