Morocco Stun Netherlands on Penalties to Reach World Cup Round of 16
Morocco produced another memorable FIFA World Cup performance by defeating the Netherlands on penalties after a dramatic 1-1 draw , securing a place in the Round of 16 and sending Dutch fans home in the country's earliest-ever World Cup exit.
The Round of 32 clash in Guadalupe, Mexico, lived up to expectations as two of the world's highest-ranked teams battled for a place in the next round. The Netherlands, ranked seventh in the world, appeared on course for victory when Cody Gakpo broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute. The forward finished off a move created by Crysencio Summerville , sparking emotional scenes as the Dutch bench rushed onto the field to celebrate with him. Gakpo was seen in tears after the goal, having recently suffered a personal tragedy with partner Noa van der Bij following the loss of their unborn child.
Morocco, ranked sixth globally, refused to give up and found a dramatic equaliser in stoppage time. Issa Diop headed home in the 91st minute from a cross delivered by Chemsdine Talbi , forcing the contest into extra time and keeping the Atlas Lions' hopes alive.
With neither side able to find a winner, the match was decided in a penalty shootout. Ismael Saibari converted the decisive spot kick to seal Morocco's victory and send the African side into the Round of 16, where they will face co-host Canada on Saturday.
The result sparked jubilant celebrations across Morocco, particularly in Casablanca, where fans filled the streets waving national flags, setting off flares and fireworks, and chanting in support of their team. However, celebrations in the Netherlands were marred by unrest. Police in The Hague reported that officers were pelted with fireworks and stones in the Schilderswijk district, prompting riot squads to intervene and deploy a water cannon. Several arrests were made following the disturbances.
With expectations rising, Moroccan supporters are dreaming of another historic World Cup run after becoming the first African nation to reach the semifinals of the 2022 World Cup .
