A war of words between the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) intensified on Wednesday after BJP MP and national spokesperson Sambit Patra launched a sharp attack on Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy over his comments directed at BJP national president Nitin Nabin . The controversy has further heightened political tensions in Telangana, where both parties are increasingly positioning themselves for the next electoral battle.

Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, Patra described Revanth Reddy’s remarks as “objectionable and condemnable,” alleging that they reflected the Congress party’s longstanding culture of political arrogance. He accused the Chief Minister of attempting to belittle the leader of the world’s largest political party and said such comments were unbecoming of someone holding a constitutional office.

Patra further remarked that if Revanth Reddy was unfamiliar with the BJP president’s name, it raised serious questions about his understanding of national politics. According to the BJP leader, the Congress has traditionally struggled to respect leaders outside its own fold and continues to operate within a culture centered around a single political family.

The controversy traces its roots to Nitin Nabin’s recent Telangana visit , during which he expressed confidence that the BJP would form the government in the state after the 2028 Assembly elections . Seeking to energize party cadres, Nabin called upon BJP workers to strengthen the party at the grassroots level and work towards making Telangana a BJP-governed state.

Reacting to those remarks at a ‘Rythu Bharosa’ meeting in Hyderabad on Tuesday, Revanth Reddy dismissed the BJP’s electoral ambitions and took a swipe at Nabin, saying he was not even fully aware of the BJP leader’s name. The Chief Minister also ridiculed the BJP’s prediction of coming to power in Telangana, arguing that political formulas used elsewhere would not succeed in the state.

Drawing a comparison with West Bengal , Revanth Reddy said the BJP had made similar claims there and spent years trying to establish itself politically. While acknowledging that circumstances in West Bengal may have allowed the party to gain some traction, he asserted that Telangana’s political landscape was fundamentally different. He maintained that Congress leaders and workers would firmly counter the BJP and prevent it from making significant electoral gains.

The exchange comes at a time when the BJP has stepped up its attacks on the Congress government over the alleged delay in implementing election guarantees and welfare commitments. Nitin Nabin recently announced plans for statewide agitations , accusing the Telangana government of failing to fulfil several promises made to voters during the 2023 Assembly election campaign.

Political observers view the latest confrontation as more than a routine verbal clash. With the Congress seeking to consolidate its hold on Telangana and the BJP aggressively expanding its footprint in southern India , the battle between the two parties is expected to intensify in the coming years. The sharp rhetoric from both sides suggests that the groundwork for the 2028 Assembly elections has already begun, making Telangana one of the most closely watched political arenas in the country.
