After 48 hours of relentless monsoon rain , Mumbai finally received a breather on Tuesday as showers eased, allowing local train services, road traffic and daily life to gradually return to normal. However, fresh spells of rain continued to disrupt rail operations in some areas, while civic authorities remained on high alert.

The city recorded an average rainfall of 22.39 mm between 8 am and 8 pm, with the eastern suburbs receiving 23.04 mm and the western suburbs 25.93 mm .

While suburban train services resumed on most routes, Western Railway once again suspended services between Vasai and Virar around 4.30 pm after rising water levels submerged tracks. Central Railway services continued to run with minor delays.

The rain also triggered a series of civic incidents across the city. A 17-year-old boy sustained minor injuries after part of a four-storey building's wall collapsed in Govandi . In a separate incident in Andheri , another 17-year-old was injured when a portion of plaster fell from a MHADA building. Both were treated and are reported to be stable.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) received 38 complaints of tree and branch falls , along with 10 complaints of partial house or wall collapses and two reports of short circuits during the day.

There was some relief on the Mumbai-Pune railway corridor , where officials said one of the three damaged rail lines in the Bhor Ghat section was likely to be restored by Tuesday night after landslides severely disrupted services. Even so, 14 trains were cancelled , while several others were diverted, rescheduled or short-terminated.

As a precaution, all government, private and civic-run schools and colleges in Mumbai remained closed on Tuesday.

The respite came after Monday's torrential rain brought the city to a near standstill, causing widespread flooding, transport disruptions and tragic loss of life. Two boys aged 17 and 14 drowned in floodwaters, while two women were injured after cement sheets collapsed during a yoga session in Andheri.

Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious as intermittent rain is expected to continue during the ongoing monsoon.
