Mumbai Gets Season's Strongest Pre-Monsoon Spell, More Rain Forecast
Mumbai witnessed its most widespread spell of pre-monsoon rainfall this season on Sunday morning as moderate to heavy showers drenched large parts of the city, bringing much-needed relief from the heat and humidity that had prevailed over the past week. The rain affected the island city, western suburbs and eastern suburbs, while neighbouring Navi Mumbai and parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region also recorded significant showers.
Several localities, including Dadar, Matunga, Khar, Chembur, Mankhurd, Kurla, Santacruz, Vile Parle, Andheri and Versova, experienced moderate to heavy rainfall within a short span of one to two hours. Data released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) showed that rainfall distribution remained highly uneven across the city, with eastern suburbs receiving heavier showers than many island city areas. Chembur's Collectors Colony Municipal School area emerged as one of the wettest spots, recording around 27 mm rainfall , while locations in Mankhurd and Bandra-Kurla Complex also reported substantial precipitation.
The sudden downpour led to waterlogging in low-lying pockets , slowing traffic movement and causing inconvenience to commuters. A major traffic jam was reported on the Vashi-bound carriageway of the Sion-Panvel Highway after an accident amid the rain. Several motorists and two-wheeler riders, caught without rain gear, sought shelter under flyovers, skywalks and shop awnings as the showers intensified.
Despite the weather-related disruptions, there were no major untoward incidents reported. Civic authorities monitored vulnerable locations, drainage systems and flood-prone stretches as a precautionary measure. Suburban railway services remained largely operational, although some trains ran behind schedule. Officials said there were no reports of rain-related incidents affecting the rail network.
The rainfall brought relief after temperatures in parts of Mumbai had climbed above 35 degrees Celsius on Saturday. Weather experts attributed the showers to strengthening pre-monsoon conditions over the Konkan coast and moisture-laden winds from the Arabian Sea.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, including Thane and Raigad, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, moderate rainfall and gusty winds in isolated areas. The weather agency has forecast additional showers and thunderstorms over Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad during the next few days as conditions become increasingly favourable for the advance of the southwest monsoon along the west coast. Residents have been advised to remain cautious during periods of intense rainfall and thunderstorms.
