In a major crackdown on synthetic drug trafficking, the Mumbai Police have dismantled an alleged mephedrone (MD) manufacturing unit operating from Gujarat's Narmada district and seized narcotics, chemicals and equipment collectively valued at around Rs 75 crore .

The operation was carried out by the Sakinaka Police , who recovered more than 20 kg of liquid MD , along with a substantial quantity of precursor chemicals and machinery believed to have been used for the production of the synthetic drug. The seizure is being viewed as a significant success in efforts to curb the manufacture and distribution of narcotic substances across state borders.

According to police officials, the investigation began last month when officers apprehended a 26-year-old cab driver, Muskan Sameer Khan , on the Andheri-Ghatkopar Link Road in Mumbai. During the operation, police allegedly recovered 101 grams of MD from her possession.

During questioning, Khan reportedly disclosed details about the source of the narcotics, leading investigators to Wasool Kamar Abdul Wafa Chowdhary , also known as Pappu , aged 56. Police subsequently took Chowdhary into custody and continued their probe into the supply network.

Based on information obtained during the investigation, a police team traced the operation to a rented property in a village in Gujarat's Narmada district , where an alleged drug manufacturing facility had been set up. A raid on the premises resulted in the seizure of narcotics, chemicals and specialised equipment used in the production process.

Officials said the case highlights the growing challenge posed by synthetic drugs , which are often manufactured in clandestine facilities and distributed through organised networks spanning multiple states. The bust also underscores the importance of intelligence-based investigations and inter-state coordination in tackling narcotics-related crimes.

Khan and Chowdhary have been booked under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act . Police are continuing their investigation to identify other individuals linked to the manufacturing and distribution network and to determine the full extent of the operation.
