Mumbai Police Records Six-Year High With 85% Crime Detection Rate in 2026

Mumbai Police achieved an overall crime detection rate of 85 per cent between January 1 and August 31 this year, the force's best performance during this period in six years, an official said on Friday. The performance included a 4 per cent decline in crimes against women, higher detection across almost every sub-category and major gains in cyber-fraud recoveries and anti-narcotics operations.

According to Mumbai Police figures, detection reached 100 per cent in attempt-to-murder and dacoity cases, while murder and robbery cases recorded 99 per cent. The latest performance comes after the city's detection rate improved from 74 per cent in 2024 to 81 per cent in 2025, even as registered cases increased from 52,718 to 64,012.

Cybercrime has emerged as a major focus. Police froze 27.63 per cent of defrauded funds in 2026, up sharply from 4.9 per cent in 2022, enabling ₹186.36 crore to be secured for return to victims. The figure is significant amid growing digital fraud, with Mumbai residents reportedly losing ₹155 crore to digital-arrest scams alone in 2025.

Using the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR), police traced and recovered 8,039 stolen or lost mobile phones, representing 51.13 per cent of blocked handsets.

The anti-drug campaign also produced major results. Since 2024, Mumbai Police has seized 6,371 kg of drugs worth ₹1,606 crore in 3,052 cases and dismantled 11 illegal drug-manufacturing factories. Under the PITNDPS Act, 16 habitual offenders were detained, including 13 in 2026. Five key members of an international narcotics network were extradited or deported and subsequently arrested during 2025-26.

Police also registered 11 MCOCA cases, including one drug-related case, arresting 61 accused. Since 2024, 11,292 drug-awareness programmes have reached over 4.24 lakh students, teachers and parents.

Meanwhile, 559 wanted or absconding criminals were arrested, including 49 who had evaded arrest for over 20 years. Enforcement against illegal immigration also intensified, with 1,066 illegal Bangladeshi nationals deported in 2026 up to August, exceeding 1,061 in 2025 and 164 in 2024.
