Heavy monsoon showers lashed Mumbai over the past 24 hours, with several areas recording more than 100 mm of rainfall, triggering widespread waterlogging, traffic diversions and delays to suburban train services, while the India Meteorological Department (IMD) placed Mumbai, Thane and Palghar under a Red Alert for extremely heavy rainfall. The renewed spell has also turned deadly, with an 11-year-old schoolboy killed after a large peepal tree crashed onto a school bus in Chembur and a woman reportedly dying after coming into contact with an electrified pole amid rain-related conditions.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) , the eastern suburbs received an average of 109 mm of rainfall between 8 am Tuesday and 8 am Wednesday, followed by 87 mm in the western suburbs and 86 mm in the island city. Mankhurd recorded the highest rainfall at 170.4 mm, while Byculla received 162.52 mm, Mumbai Central 142.43 mm, Wadala 127 mm, Bandra Kurla Complex 132.4 mm, Borivali 126 mm and Dindoshi Fire Station 123 mm.

Between 7 am and 8 am on Wednesday, Andheri West recorded 39 mm of rainfall, followed by Andheri East with 34 mm and Bandra West with 24 mm. Water entered the Andheri subway and several low lying areas, forcing traffic diversions. BEST bus services continued normally, but suburban train services on the Central and Western Railways were delayed. Harbour Line services were briefly disrupted after an overhead wire snapped between 4.52 am and 5.45 am.

The IMD has forecast continued heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and gusty winds across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region through the first week of July. After a delayed and drier than usual June, the intensified monsoon has begun replenishing the city's seven reservoirs, with storage rising from 6.75 percent to 7.18 percent. Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant as civic teams monitor vulnerable locations, inspect ageing roadside trees and respond to rain related emergencies across the city.
