Daniel Muñoz emerged as Colombia's hero with a decisive late goal as Colombia defeated Congo 1-0 in Guadalajara on Tuesday, securing a place in the World Cup knockout stage .

For much of the contest, Colombia appeared destined for a frustrating evening. Despite dominating possession and creating a series of dangerous opportunities, they repeatedly found themselves denied by an inspired performance from Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi , who produced a string of outstanding saves to keep his side in the contest.

Mpasi was particularly impressive in the opening stages, making five difficult stops within the first 20 minutes as Colombia piled on the pressure. The African side, making its first World Cup appearance in 52 years , defended with discipline and determination, frustrating one of South America's strongest teams.

As the match wore on, Colombia continued to search for the breakthrough, probing Congo's compact defense from all angles. Their persistence finally paid off in the 76th minute .

A dangerous attack inside the penalty area created confusion among Congo defenders, and after a fortunate deflection, the ball fell kindly to Muñoz. The defender made no mistake, firing a left-footed effort into the net to spark celebrations among Colombian players and supporters alike.

The victory gives Colombia six points from two matches in Group K , guaranteeing progression to the Round of 16 . The South American side had opened its campaign with an impressive 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan , and the win over Congo further underlined its credentials as a serious contender in the tournament.

Congo, meanwhile, once again demonstrated resilience despite suffering defeat. The underdogs had captured global attention in their opening match by holding Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal to a 1-1 draw, and they proved equally difficult to break down against Colombia.

With Portugal defeating Uzbekistan 5-0 earlier in the day, the battle for top spot in Group K will be decided when Colombia and Portugal meet on Saturday. Colombia needs only a draw to finish first in the group, while the same result would also be enough to send Portugal through to the knockout rounds.

Ranked 11th in the world and among South America's strongest teams, Colombia continues to build momentum at exactly the right time as the World Cup enters its decisive phase.
