Musk Escalates Starlink Row, Shares Reports of Reliance-Linked Firms’ BJP Donations
Elon Musk has intensified his public dispute with industrialist Mukesh Ambani, sharing reports about political donations by Reliance-linked firms to the BJP and alleging attempts to protect market dominance by delaying Starlink’s entry into India.
Musk’s posts on X followed his sarcastic address to Ambani as “Prime Minister Ambani”, questioning whether the Reliance Industries chairman would allow his satellite internet service to compete in the country.
Musk shared screenshots of media reports on donations to the BJP by Reliance-linked companies, including Qwik Supply, which reportedly donated ₹385 crore to the BJP and ₹25 crore to the Shiv Sena through electoral bonds.
He has alleged that powerful corporate interests are attempting to block Starlink to protect existing players. Musk argued that Starlink could connect underserved areas, expand educational opportunities and help small businesses reach global markets. He also highlighted its role in restoring communications during natural disasters.
Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia rejected suggestions of monopolistic or discriminatory treatment, saying India does not permit monopolies and consumers are free to choose their preferred services.
Speaking at the India Mobile Congress, Scindia said three companies Starlink, Reliance Jio’s satellite venture Jio Satcom and Bharti-backed Eutelsat OneWeb had secured satellite communication licences. They can begin operations after fulfilling individual security requirements and other regulatory conditions. He added that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India and the Department of Telecommunications were nearing a decision on satellite spectrum pricing. Amazon’s Project Kuiper has also expressed interest in entering the market.
