Nagarjuna and Mani Ratnam’s evergreen romantic classic 'Geethanjali' is finally set to return to theatres. After its 4K re-release was postponed twice, the 1989 classic will now hit the big screen on November 13, 2026, with Annapurna Studios confirming the new date.

The film was initially announced for a November 14, 2025 re-release, but the plan did not materialise. It was later scheduled for August 28, 2026, coinciding with Nagarjuna’s birthday, before being postponed again because the restoration work was still underway. Reports at the time said the makers were taking additional time to ensure the restored version met the desired visual and audio quality.

Shree Padmini Cinemas, led by Boorle Shiva Prasad, is handling the re-release. The earlier plan was for the digitally restored version to receive a worldwide theatrical release in both Telugu and Tamil, with the 4K presentation offering sharper visuals, richer colours and enhanced sound.

The restoration has added another interesting layer to the re-release. Prasad Corp carried out the digital restoration, while cinematographer PC Sreeram personally reviewed the restored footage and colour grading. Sreeram has said the process retained the original colours, textures and contrasts of the 1989 film.

Directed and written by Mani Ratnam, 'Geethanjali' holds a special place in Telugu cinema as his only direct Telugu film. The story follows Prakash, played by Nagarjuna, and Geethanjali, played by Girija Shettar, two young people battling terminal illnesses who find love despite knowing that their time together may be limited.

Released on May 12, 1989, the film became a major success and ran for more than 100 days. It also won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment and several Nandi Awards. Its Tamil dubbed version, 'Idhayathai Thirudathey', also found a strong audience.

Girija’s debut performance, Nagarjuna’s romantic portrayal, PC Sreeram’s atmospheric cinematography and Ilaiyaraaja’s soulful music remain among the film’s biggest attractions. Sreeram has recalled that much of the film was shot across real locations in Ooty, using natural and artificial mist to create its distinctive visual mood, while 'O Priya Priya' was filmed in Rajasthan.

Produced under the Bhagyalakshmi Enterprises banner, 'Geethanjali' has remained a favourite across generations. Nagarjuna has also previously spoken of the film as one of his Top 5 films, reflecting its lasting significance in his career.
