Nagpur Police Book X User Over Fake Post on Protest Outside RSS Headquarters

Nagpur Police have registered a case against an X (formerly Twitter) user for allegedly spreading a fake social media post claiming that thousands of students had surrounded the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) headquarters in Nagpur's Mahal area during protests over the alleged NEET 2026 paper leak. Police said no such protest took place and described the viral post as false, misleading and capable of disturbing public order.

According to investigators, the post, shared from the account @VeezPunit, claimed that thousands of students had gathered at the RSS headquarters and also contained objectionable remarks against the organisation. After verifying the claim, police found that no such incident had occurred and concluded that the content was fabricated. The FIR was subsequently registered at Kotwali Police Station following a complaint from the Cyber Branch.

Police said the misleading post had the potential to create fear, spread rumours and disrupt law and order, particularly because the RSS headquarters is a sensitive location. A case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and cyber investigators are examining the origin of the post, its circulation and whether others amplified the misinformation. No arrest has been made so far, and the investigation remains ongoing.

The case comes as Nagpur Police have significantly intensified digital surveillance during recent protests. Officials said cyber teams scanned more than 6,500 social media posts between July 20 and 24, flagged around 350 posts for scrutiny and issued nearly 30 takedown notices over objectionable or misleading content. Senior officers said authorities are adopting a dual strategy of physical deployment and online monitoring to prevent misinformation from escalating into public unrest.

As of July 26, police have not disclosed the identity of the account holder, the specific BNS sections invoked, or whether any summons have been issued. Officials have reiterated that no protest occurred outside the RSS headquarters and urged social media users to verify information before sharing it.
