The Nanded-Waghala City Municipal Corporation has successfully stopped the discharge of untreated sewage into the Godavari river from 22 major drains , marking a significant step in the city’s river conservation and pollution control drive, officials said.

Municipal Commissioner Dr Maheshkumar Doiphode reviewed the progress of ongoing works and instructed officials to strengthen monitoring under the AMRUT 2.0 programme , which aims to ensure universal sewerage coverage and safe wastewater management in urban areas.

As part of the project, authorities have constructed a 3.3-km sewer line running parallel to the river and installed 17 interception structures to capture and divert wastewater away from natural drains. Sewage is now being routed to the Bondhar Sewage Treatment Plant and other treatment facilities before discharge.

Officials said pocket treatment plants between Bandaghat and Govardhan Ghat, along with a new facility on the Chunal stream, have also become operational. In the southern part of the city, sewage from six major drains has been diverted to the Vasarni pumping station through a 2.1-km pipeline network.

The initiative comes amid long-standing concerns over severe river pollution in Nanded , where previous assessments by environmental bodies flagged high levels of untreated sewage entering the Godavari through multiple drains. The city’s sanitation reforms aim to close these gaps through expanded treatment capacity and real-time monitoring systems.

The civic body has also directed upgrades at STPs in Bondhar, Ilichpur, Sangvi and Dunkin, along with intensified pre-monsoon drain cleaning to prevent overflow. Special sanitation teams will be deployed at major ghats, including Ram Ghat and Nav Ghat, to manage religious waste and plastic disposal.

Officials will additionally monitor dissolved oxygen levels and control aquatic weed growth, while urging citizens to avoid dumping waste into the river.
