Nanded’s SRTMU Wins Patent for Advanced Anti-Tubercular Drug Delivery Technology

The Swami Ramanand Teerth Marathwada University (SRTMU) in Maharashtra’s Nanded has secured an Indian patent for a nanostructured drug-delivery technology aimed at improving the effectiveness of poorly water-soluble anti-tubercular medicines, university officials said. The patent, titled “Nanostructured Delivery Device for Poorly Water-Soluble Anti-Tubercular Drugs and Method Thereof,” has been granted for 20 years, according to the university.

The technology seeks to address a major formulation challenge: drugs with poor water solubility can dissolve less efficiently in bodily fluids, potentially limiting their absorption and bioavailability. In general, reducing a drug to the nanoscale can increase its effective surface area, allowing it to dissolve more readily. Depending on the formulation, nanostructured carriers can also help with drug dispersion, controlled release and delivery to the body.

However, SRTMU has not publicly identified the specific anti-TB drug used in the patented system. The university’s announcement also does not disclose the exact nanomaterial, particle size or detailed mechanism through which the formulation improves delivery. Similarly, quantitative experimental results have not been made public. The announcement does not provide figures for improvements in solubility, dissolution, bioavailability, drug loading or therapeutic response. It describes the technology as having the potential to enhance drug delivery and therapeutic effectiveness rather than claiming a clinically demonstrated benefit.

There is also no publicly reported evidence that the specific patented formulation has undergone animal studies or human clinical trials. The available announcement does not mention preclinical or clinical testing.

This distinction is significant because obtaining a patent establishes intellectual-property protection but does not by itself demonstrate clinical safety or efficacy.
