Andhra Pradesh Education, IT, and Electronics Minister Nara Lokesh criticized the previous YSR Congress government, claiming that Andhra University (AU) had been treated more like a party office than a premier academic institution. Addressing questions in the legislative assembly on Friday, he said the university’s prestige had declined sharply during the past five years.

Lokesh noted that AU, which was ranked 29th in the NIRF rankings in 2019 , had fallen to 76th by 2023 under the previous administration. Within days of taking office, the current government improved its position to 41st and is now targeting a Top-10 ranking .

Regarding irregularities at AU, Lokesh confirmed that a vigilance investigation into former VC Prasad Reddy’s tenure is ongoing, with a report expected in 45 days . He warned that strict action will follow against anyone found responsible. He also accused the previous government of appointing party loyalists across all state universities and stated that a manpower audit is underway. The audit is expected to be completed within 30 days , after which unqualified staff will face consequences.

Lokesh assured that the government is coordinating with the Finance Department on regularizing contract and NTS staff and confirmed that AU’s centenary celebrations will be held with grandeur.

The minister also highlighted efforts to modernize citizen services through the ‘Manamitra’ platform . Currently offering 943 services , the app has benefited 1.48 crore people . Based on user feedback, AI integration will be introduced in ‘Manamitra 2.0’ to make the system more user-friendly and reduce repetitive data entry while ensuring data security .

He further announced WhatsApp-based services to deliver all government services through a single number, addressing citizen difficulties observed during the Yuvagalana Padayatra. To tackle delays in certificate issuance and QR code issues, a 90-day action plan has been prepared. A door-to-door campaign will soon ensure these digital services reach every household.
