The National Teachers Awards are more than ceremonial honours. They are designed to recognise educators whose excellence, innovation and commitment improve school education and enrich students’ lives. In 2026, 48 school teachers from across States, Union Territories and Central Government organisations will receive the national honour, with President Droupadi Murmu presenting the awards on Teachers’ Day, September 5, at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.

The programme’s significance lies in making effective teaching visible. By celebrating teachers who deliver results, it creates role models for the profession and encourages educators to adopt creative, inclusive and student-centred approaches. The Ministry of Education says the awards recognise outstanding contributions to improving education quality and promoting students’ holistic development.

The selection process is designed to be transparent and competitive. Teachers submit online self-nominations, followed by scrutiny at the District/Regional and State/Organisation levels. Shortlisted candidates interact with an Independent National Jury, which makes the final recommendations before approval. This multi-stage process aims to ensure that recognition is based on demonstrated merit rather than seniority or routine service.

The evaluation framework places strong emphasis on performance and educational impact. Indicative areas include initiatives that improve learning outcomes, innovative pedagogy, joyful and experiential learning, effective use of technology, teaching-learning materials, extra-curricular activities, physical education, community participation and social awareness. Earlier official guidelines also highlighted efforts to increase enrolment, reduce dropouts, develop digital content and mobilise community resources.

This approach can strengthen school education in several ways. First, it incentivises teachers to experiment and innovate. Second, it encourages sharing of successful practices across schools and regions. Third, national recognition can raise the professional status of teachers and motivate sustained improvement.

Ultimately, the awards seek to create a virtuous cycle of recognition, innovation and better learning. Their wider value lies not simply in rewarding 48 individuals, but in signalling what India expects from modern teaching: stronger learning outcomes, inclusive classrooms, creativity, technology-enabled education and the holistic development of every child.
