Navy Sailor Found Hanging, Wife and Two Children Dead in South Mumbai

A 30-year-old Indian Navy sailor, his wife and their two young children were found dead at their residence in the Navy Nagar area of south Mumbai, police said on Sunday. The incident has prompted an investigation by the Cuffe Parade police.

The deceased sailor was identified as Puranmal Shambhulal Mehra. Police said Mehra was found hanging at the residence, while the bodies of his 28-year-old wife, Oma, their three-year-old son Yash and their two-month-old daughter were found lying on a bed.

According to a police official, a preliminary assessment suggests that Mehra may have died by suicide, while his wife and children are suspected to have died after being poisoned. However, officials said the exact circumstances surrounding the deaths would be established only after a detailed investigation and post-mortem examinations.

The bodies were subsequently taken to JJ Hospital for post-mortem examinations. Police have registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) in connection with the incident.

No suicide note has been recovered from the residence so far, police said. Investigators are examining the circumstances leading up to the deaths and are also expected to gather forensic and other evidence from the scene.

The Indian Navy confirmed the deaths in a statement, saying that the sailor, along with his wife and two children, was found dead at their residence.

The Navy said it was extending all possible assistance to the ongoing investigation. The force also expressed support as authorities work to determine the circumstances behind the deaths.

Police officials said the investigation remains underway and further details are expected after the completion of the post-mortem and forensic procedures.
