NC's Delhi Protest Strengthens Constitutional Push for Jammu and Kashmir Statehood

National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah on Wednesday described the party-led protest in Delhi demanding the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's statehood as a defining moment in the Union Territory's democratic journey, asserting that it reaffirmed people's faith in constitutional and democratic methods.

Speaking at the 49th Parents' Day function organised by the Rural Development Society at Tagore Hall in Srinagar, Abdullah said the July 20 protest at Jantar Mantar demonstrated that citizens from diverse backgrounds remain united in seeking the restoration of the region's democratic rights.

He said the participation of people across regions, religions and generations sent a clear message that Jammu and Kashmir's pluralistic character remains resilient despite attempts to deepen political and communal divisions. According to Abdullah, the rally showed that the politics of unity carries greater strength than efforts aimed at polarisation.

The former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister maintained that the gathering reflected the people's determination to pursue their legitimate aspirations through peaceful, democratic means rather than confrontation. He added that the presence of young participants from different faiths underscored the growing appeal of constitutional politics over divisive narratives.

The demand for restoring Jammu and Kashmir's statehood has remained one of the principal political issues since the erstwhile state was reorganised into two Union Territories in August 2019. Several political parties argue that restoring statehood is essential for strengthening democratic accountability, elected governance and administrative autonomy within the framework of the Constitution.

Supporters of statehood contend that an elected state government enjoys broader legislative and executive powers than a Union Territory administration, enabling greater local participation in policymaking. They also view restoration as an important step toward rebuilding public confidence and normal political processes.

Abdullah said the Delhi demonstration illustrated that when citizens unite around constitutional rights, democratic values and justice, political differences can be addressed peacefully, reinforcing the belief that dialogue and democratic participation remain the strongest foundations for Jammu and Kashmir's future.
