NDA vs INDIA Bloc: How Jharkhand Student Unrest and Ram Temple Row Escalated Political Battle

The confrontation over student protests and alleged Ram temple donation irregularities has intensified, with the NDA and INDIA block trading charges while investigations continue and no final judicial finding has established all allegations.

The Jharkhand controversy centres on protests over alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations, including claims of paper leaks and demands for cancellations, reforms and an independent probe. Thousands of youths marched towards the state Assembly on August 10. Police used tear gas, batons and water cannon after clashes, while authorities said force was used to control the situation. Police have since registered an FIR against 300 unidentified people and said video footage will be examined to identify those involved. The protesters, however, have alleged excessive force.

The issue has become intertwined with the separate July 20 student protest in Delhi over examination paper leaks. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has demanded accountability from Union Home Minister Amit Shah over alleged police excesses, while Shah has said he is ready for an extended parliamentary debate and can answer questions. The Opposition wants specific accountability over who authorised the alleged use of force.

The Ram temple controversy concerns alleged embezzlement of cash donations made by devotees at the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya. The matter is under investigation by a Special Investigation Team, and the Supreme Court has been monitoring the proceedings. Eight accused have been arrested, while an Ayodhya court has extended their judicial custody as investigators question them. The SIT has recovered about Rs 79.85 lakh from accused persons, according to court-related reporting.

However, arrests and recoveries do not amount to proof of guilt. The investigation remains ongoing, and the SIT's status report has not publicly established the entire allegation of a wider donation scam.

The two controversies have therefore become potent weapons. The Opposition says they demonstrate failures of accountability, while the government points to ongoing investigations and its willingness to debate. Parliament's functioning has suffered as protests and counter-protests have overshadowed substantive legislative scrutiny.
