Neeraj Chopra Faces Star-Studded Javelin Field at Lausanne Diamond League

Two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra will return to action at the Lausanne Diamond League on August 21, where he is set to face one of the strongest men's javelin fields of the season, including Commonwealth Games champion and world leader Rumesh Pathirage of Sri Lanka.

The Lausanne meet will be Chopra's third competition since returning from a lower-back injury that sidelined him in September last year. The 28-year-old began his comeback by finishing fourth at the Doha Diamond League in June with a throw of 85.69m before improving to a season-best 85.83m to claim the silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The Indian ace will compete against an elite line-up featuring Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan, reigning world champion Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago, former world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada, former Olympic champion Thomas Röhler of Germany, Tokyo Olympic silver medallist Jakub Vadlejch of the Czech Republic, Germany's Julian Weber, Switzerland's Simon Wieland, and world No. 2 Curtis Thompson of the United States.

The event will also feature five javelin throwers from the recently concluded Commonwealth Games, underlining the depth of the competition. The organisers described the field as one featuring the athletes who have won the last four editions of the Olympic Games and World Championships, promising a contest of exceptional quality.

After winning silver in Glasgow, Chopra expressed satisfaction with his progress, saying he was pleased with his season's best throw and felt his comeback was moving in the right direction despite missing out on gold.

Chopra has enjoyed success in Lausanne before, winning the title in 2022 with 89.08m and finishing runner-up in 2024 with 89.49m, his career fourth-best throw.

Meanwhile, Rumesh Pathirage heads into the meet in outstanding form after winning the Commonwealth Games gold with 89.75m. The Sri Lankan owns a season-leading personal best of 92.62m, achieved at the Golden Gala Pietro Mennea in Rome in June, making him the only javelin thrower to breach the 90-metre mark this season.
