India’s javelin throw star Neeraj Chopra will return to competitive action at the Doha Diamond League on June 19, ending weeks of speculation over his season schedule.

The 28-year-old Olympic medallist has been out of action due to a back injury , which kept him away from competitions earlier this year. He has been training at the Olympic Centre in Switzerland as part of his rehabilitation and preparation for a comeback.

His management firm Vel Sports confirmed the news on Instagram, saying, “First throw of 2026 lands in Doha! Neeraj Chopra returns to competitive action on June 19.” Chopra also shared a brief message on social media, stating: “See you in Doha.”

Interestingly, Chopra has been included as a late addition to the Doha meet, with his name missing from the initial entry list released by organisers on June 12. His return is expected to significantly boost the quality of the competition.

He will face a strong international field , including season leader Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage, who recently threw a massive 92.62m at the Rome Diamond League. The lineup also features reigning world champion Keshorn Walcott, two-time world champion Anderson Peters, and USA’s Curtis Thompson.

Other competitors include Julius Yego of Kenya, Jakub Vadlejch of Czechia, Mohamed Huseein Ahmed Sameh of Egypt, and Artur Felfner, making it a nine-man elite field .

Chopra had previously breached the coveted 90m mark in Doha , registering 90.23m in 2025, finishing second behind Germany’s Julian Weber.

The Doha Diamond League, originally scheduled for May 8, was postponed due to the West Asia conflict . Chopra’s comeback will be closely watched as he looks to regain top form and build momentum for the rest of the season.
