Neeraj Chopra Set to Defend Asian Games Gold, AFI Confirms Participation
India's Olympic javelin star Neeraj Chopra will defend his Asian Games title later this year after the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) confirmed that he will compete at the continental showpiece in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan , alongside his previously announced participation in the Commonwealth Games .
The confirmation ends weeks of speculation over Chopra's schedule after he made a delayed return to competition following a lower back injury that disrupted the early part of his 2026 season. Recovering from the injury he suffered ahead of the 2025 Tokyo World Championships , the two time Olympic medallist resumed competition at the Doha Diamond League , where he finished fourth with a best throw of 85.69 metres .
AFI Selection Committee Chairman Adille Sumariwalla expressed confidence that Chopra is steadily returning to his best and believes the reigning champion remains one of India's strongest medal hopes despite the injury setback.
According to Sumariwalla, Chopra has already achieved the qualifying mark and his first competition after rehabilitation showed encouraging signs. He pointed out that Chopra won the previous Asian Games gold with a throw of 88.88 metres , and with his comeback already nearing the 86 metre mark, the federation expects him to be in top shape by the time the major events arrive.
The Asian Games , scheduled from September 19 to October 4 , are expected to witness one of the strongest men's javelin fields in recent years. Chopra could face rising Sri Lankan sensation Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage , who crossed the coveted 90 metre barrier earlier this season and has already claimed two Diamond League titles, including victory in Doha.
There is also the possibility of Pakistan's Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem joining the competition. If he participates, the rivalry between Chopra and Nadeem is likely to become one of the biggest attractions of the Games. Although Nadeem withdrew from the Doha Diamond League despite initially being listed, his presence in Japan would add another exciting chapter to one of athletics' most talked about rivalries.
Before heading to Japan, Chopra will spearhead India's campaign at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow , which will be held from July 23 to August 2 . The AFI has already included him in the Indian contingent but has left the decision on competing in additional meets entirely to his support team.
Sumariwalla said Chopra's medical experts and coach will jointly decide whether he should participate in more competitions before the Commonwealth Games. The federation's primary objective, he explained, is to ensure the Indian star reaches peak form for both marquee events instead of overburdening him with unnecessary competitions.
The AFI is expected to announce India's athletics squad for the Asian Games following the conclusion of the ongoing National Inter State Senior Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar.
With his fitness steadily improving and confidence growing after a promising comeback, Chopra now enters the most important phase of his season. As India's biggest athletics icon prepares for two major international tournaments, expectations will once again rest on his shoulders to deliver medals and reaffirm his status among the world's elite javelin throwers.
