The ongoing NEET-UG 2026 paper leak controversy has snowballed into a major national issue, prompting sharp scrutiny from the Supreme Court , a widening CBI investigation , and fresh questions over the credibility of the National Testing Agency (NTA) . As millions of medical aspirants await a fresh examination scheduled for June 21 , the controversy has reignited concerns about examination security, institutional accountability and the future of India's competitive entrance test system.

Hearing a batch of petitions related to the case, the Supreme Court on Friday stressed that the recurring problem of examination irregularities would not end until there is "actual accountability" . The bench of Justices P.S. Narasimha and Alok Aradhe observed that the impact of such incidents extends far beyond the examination process, affecting students and families who invest years of effort, money and emotions in preparing for medical admissions.

The controversy erupted after the May 3 NEET-UG examination came under suspicion following allegations that question papers had been leaked through organised networks operating across multiple states. As concerns mounted, the NTA cancelled the examination on May 12 and announced a re-test. The alleged leak is now under investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) , which has reportedly uncovered an interstate network involving coaching operators, intermediaries and other individuals suspected of facilitating access to examination material before the test.

During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the court that the government was treating the issue with utmost seriousness and that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was personally monitoring efforts to ensure there were no lapses in the re-examination. He also stated that enhanced security mechanisms had been introduced for the June 21 test, although details were not disclosed for operational reasons.

The court questioned how such failures could continue despite reforms initiated after previous controversies, including the widely debated NEET-UG 2024 irregularities . Drawing a comparison with the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) , the judges noted that similar paper leak controversies had not affected its examinations and suggested that the NTA should learn from established institutional practices.

The Supreme Court also reviewed submissions from Dr K. Radhakrishnan , former ISRO Chairman and head of the high-powered committee on NTA reforms. While several recommendations have reportedly been implemented, the judges asked how the latest breach occurred despite ongoing reform efforts. The Centre has now been directed to submit a detailed roadmap outlining how future examinations will be conducted and safeguarded.

The controversy has triggered widespread criticism of the NTA, with student groups, medical associations and petitioners accusing the agency of failing to strengthen safeguards despite earlier warnings. Several petitions have sought either a restructuring or replacement of the testing agency with a more autonomous and robust examination body. Critics have also highlighted the absence of clear accountability and the growing mental stress faced by lakhs of students due to repeated disruptions.

As preparations intensify for the June 21 re-test, authorities have announced stricter security arrangements, closer coordination with law-enforcement agencies and enhanced monitoring of examination centres. The NTA has also indicated that NEET-UG may transition to a computer-based format from 2027 , a move aimed at reducing vulnerabilities associated with physical question papers.

With the Supreme Court continuing to monitor the matter, the Centre preparing a reform blueprint and the CBI probe gathering pace, the NEET-UG controversy has evolved into a larger debate on institutional competence, examination integrity and accountability in India's education system.
