NEET-UG Paper Leak Controversy Continues as Opposition Demands Accountability

The NEET-UG 2026 paper leak controversy continues to dominate the national spotlight, with Opposition parties , student organisations, and several education groups demanding greater accountability from the Union Education Ministry over alleged irregularities in the conduct of India's largest medical entrance examination.

The controversy began after the May 3, 2026 examination, when a purported "guess paper" circulating before the test was found to closely resemble the actual NEET-UG question paper. Following preliminary investigations by the Rajasthan Police , authorities uncovered evidence suggesting the involvement of an organised paper leak network. In response, the National Testing Agency (NTA) cancelled the examination on May 12, 2026 , citing concerns over the integrity of the test, and announced a nationwide re-examination. The investigation was subsequently transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which has made multiple arrests while continuing its probe.

The issue soon escalated into a major political controversy, with the Opposition accusing the government of failing to protect the credibility of national examinations and demanding responsibility from the Education Ministry and senior NTA officials. The Central Government , however, has maintained that it acted promptly by cancelling the examination, ordering a CBI investigation , and strengthening security measures for the re-examination. The NTA has also stated that the alleged leak did not originate from its internal systems.

Beyond the political debate, the controversy has deeply affected more than 22 lakh medical aspirants , many of whom were compelled to prepare for the examination a second time. The incident has raised serious concerns regarding exam security , student mental stress , transparency , and public confidence in India's competitive examination system. As the CBI investigation continues, education experts and stakeholders have renewed calls for comprehensive exam reforms to safeguard the fairness and credibility of future national entrance examinations.
