Nehru's Record, Now Modi's: India Reacts as Modi Becomes Its Longest Continuously Serving Elected PM
The mathematics of history turned on a single day on Wednesday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi completed 4,399 consecutive days in office , surpassing Jawaharlal Nehru’s record of 4,398 days as an elected Prime Minister to become the longest continuously serving elected head of government in India’s history. The milestone, precise to the day, triggered a cascade of tributes at home and abroad, a Union Cabinet resolution , and an NDA conclave that turned celebratory by evening.
Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan described the achievement as a reflection of a “transformative era” in India’s development journey, while Defence Minister Rajnath Singh termed Modi a “tireless Karmayogi” guided by the principle of “Nation First.” Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman called it a historic milestone, crediting the government’s commitment to Antyodaya for ensuring development reached the country’s most marginalized citizens. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said the 4,399 days in office reflected the enduring confidence the people of India had placed in Modi’s vision.
Union Ministers Piyush Goyal and Annpurna Devi offered prayers at a temple in Chanakyapuri, while Arjun Ram Meghwal and MP Sambit Patra visited the Jagannath Temple in Puri, with similar observances seen across the country as BJP workers and leaders marked the occasion with religious ceremonies and congratulatory banners. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath called the milestone a celebration of Modi’s “austerity, sacrifice and foresight,” while former Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa termed it a historic moment in India’s democratic journey.
By evening, Prime Minister Modi shared jhalmuri with NDA leaders at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, where alliance partners gathered to congratulate him before posing for a group photograph. A resolution marking Modi’s 12-year tenure was moved by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and seconded by Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio . The Union Cabinet also passed a resolution honouring the milestone, with Cabinet colleagues rising in a standing ovation.
International recognition came from several directions. US Ambassador Sergio Gor called the achievement a testament to decades of public service, while Israeli Ambassador Reuven Azar drew parallels with long-serving global leaders, citing deep reforms and long-term vision. Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape described Modi as a role model of leadership, while US Senator John Cornyn highlighted India’s economic growth, poverty reduction and expanding global influence. Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar also acknowledged India’s rising global profile under Modi’s leadership.
The opposition offered no congratulations. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh dismissed the record as a “self-proclaimed and dubiously invented” milestone, calling Modi a “millstone” and accusing him of presiding over the “murder of democracy.” MNM chief Kamal Haasan , however, struck a more measured note, saying that in a diverse democracy, sustained public trust was a significant feat.
One distinction remains firmly with Nehru, his total tenure of more than 16 years across three election victories. What Wednesday’s milestone confirmed is that no Prime Minister before Modi has held office without interruption for longer, a record built one democratic mandate at a time.
