Nepal all set for historic elections tomorrow
Nepal has 165 electoral constituencies for the House of Representatives under the 2015 Constitution , with elections scheduled to be held on March 5 . These constituencies are determined on the basis of geography and population and operate under the First-Past-The-Post (FPTP) system , where the candidate securing the highest votes wins the seat. In addition, 110 members are elected through a Proportional Representation (PR) system , bringing the total strength of the House to 275 members .
A total of 18,903,689 voters are eligible to participate in the upcoming election. The voter list includes 9,663,358 men , 9,240,131 women , and around 200 individuals classified under the “other” category. To facilitate voting, the Election Commission has established 10,967 polling stations across the country. This marks an increase of 168 polling stations compared to the 10,892 centres used in the previous election, reflecting expanded administrative preparations.
As many as 3,484 candidates representing 68 political parties and independents have registered their nominations for the House elections. In the proportional representation category, only 63 political parties have submitted their closed lists of candidates, as required under the electoral framework. Parties must comply with inclusion requirements while preparing their PR lists to ensure representation of women and marginalized communities.
The mixed electoral system under the 2015 Constitution combines direct constituency-based representation with proportional allocation of seats to promote inclusive governance and balanced representation . The 165 constituencies ensure regional accountability, while the 110 proportional seats strengthen representation for diverse social groups. With all preparations in place, authorities have confirmed readiness for smooth conduct of the elections on March 5.
