Nepal Flood Crisis Worsens as Death Toll Reaches 669, Thousands Still Missing

Nepal’s flood disaster has worsened, with the death toll reaching 669 as rescue teams continue searching for thousands of people still unaccounted for following devastating floods, landslides and debris flows across the Himalayan country.

Authorities have intensified search operations in affected districts, while helicopters and security personnel are being deployed to reach communities cut off after roads and bridges were destroyed. More than 3,700 people have reportedly been rescued, although difficult terrain and damaged infrastructure continue to hamper relief efforts.

Concerns over another major flood have also eased somewhat after water from a landslide-created lake near the Nepal-China border began draining naturally. Authorities continue monitoring the area because another larger water body remains under observation, keeping the possibility of renewed flooding a concern.

The scale of the disaster has prompted Nepal to seek international technical assistance, particularly for specialised rescue operations, identification of recovered bodies and restoring critical infrastructure. India and China have contributed relief supplies and support as Kathmandu expands its response.

The disaster has also affected foreign visitors travelling through Nepal’s Himalayan regions. Authorities are coordinating efforts to locate and assist foreign tourists, including Indian nationals whose whereabouts remain uncertain.

Meanwhile, the economic impact is becoming clearer. Floodwaters and landslides have damaged roads, bridges, hydropower installations, homes and border infrastructure, threatening transportation and local livelihoods. Preliminary assessments suggest reconstruction could require billions of dollars.

With unstable slopes and glacial lakes still being monitored, Nepal’s emergency response is entering a crucial stage. Authorities now face the twin challenge of finding survivors and preventing further casualties, while beginning what could become a prolonged reconstruction effort.
