In a significant effort to enhance support for senior citizens, the Telangana government inaugurated a new Day Care Centre for elderly citizens on Wednesday in Nizamabad. The centre, established in the Red Cross Society building , was inaugurated by Government Adviser P. Sudarshan Reddy and District Collector Ila Tripathi , marking a key local implementation of the state’s broader Pranaam programme for senior citizen welfare.

The Telangana government launched the Pranaam initiative part of its inclusive development strategy under the Telangana Rising 2047 Vision with the aim of creating multi-service day care centres for older adults across the state. These centres are designed to address issues of social isolation, health challenges, and lack of meaningful engagement that many senior citizens face, especially those living alone or whose family members are employed elsewhere.

The Nizamabad centre will provide daily services tailored to the needs of elderly residents. These include health check-ups, guided physical exercises, recreational and social activities , and opportunities for community interaction. The facility is intended not only as a place for seniors to receive basic health monitoring but also as a space where they can socialise, stay mentally active, and take part in group activities that promote emotional well-being.

During the inauguration, Government Adviser Sudarshan Reddy announced ₹15 lakh in financial assistance for the Red Cross Society’s operations in the district, underlining government support for strengthening local elderly care infrastructure. District Collector Ila Tripathi emphasised that the administration will take further measures to improve amenities for elders, including the installation of a lift to enhance accessibility for physically challenged visitors.

The establishment of the Nizamabad Day Care Centre is part of a wider rollout of Pranaam centres across Telangana. Official sources indicate that multiple centres are being opened in selected districts , with the government’s plan to eventually have a centre in each constituency. These facilities typically operate on weekdays and offer not only health services but also nutritious meals, library and internet access, and spaces for indoor games and social interaction.

The Pranaam programme aligns with other recent policy measures aimed at enhancing dignity and care for the elderly. Telangana’s leadership has highlighted the importance of family support, proposing legislation to penalise government employees who neglect elderly parents by deducting a portion of their salaries and transferring it directly to the parents’ accounts. This move reflects the state’s emphasis on both institutional and familial responsibility for elder care.

Officials and community members alike have welcomed the initiative. By offering a supportive environment where seniors can spend time during the day, access healthcare, and engage with peers, the Nizamabad Day Care Centre is expected to improve the quality of life for many older adults. The centre stands as a model for replicating elder care services across Telangana, reinforcing the government’s commitment to fostering dignity, health, and social inclusion for its ageing population.
