Nihal Sarin produced one of the most dominant runs ever seen in online speed chess, defeating reigning champion Alireza Firouzja twice in the Grand Final to become the first Indian to win the Chess.com Bullet Chess Championship .

In a format where even a one-point swing can feel decisive, Nihal’s victory was extraordinary for both its scale and the opponent he beat. Firouzja came into the final as the three-time champion and two-time defending champion, widely regarded as one of the most dangerous bullet players in the world. But Nihal not only defeated him, he overwhelmed him.

After fighting his way through the losers bracket, Nihal first crushed Firouzja 15.5-7.5 in the Grand Final to reset the bracket. He then completed the job in the second Grand Final, winning 9.5-5.5 to seal a historic title. Across the two matches, he even produced a stunning 15-0 run , a passage of play that fans described in online chess slang as Nihal “adopting” Firouzja. Against a player of Firouzja’s stature, such a sequence is almost unheard of.

The Bullet Chess Championship is one of Chess.com’s most popular speed events and has grown into a serious elite competition over the past decade. Bullet chess is played at one minute per player with no increment , meaning there is no extra time added after each move. Matches are not single games but a continuous group of games played within a fixed match clock. Most rounds are played over 30 minutes , while the later rounds, including the winners final and grand final, are longer. The player leading at the end wins, provided the margin rules are satisfied.

That format makes bullet chess brutally demanding. Players must calculate, premove, manage mouse speed, avoid blunders, flag opponents and still maintain positional sense under extreme time pressure. What was once seen by some as an online spectacle has now become a respected format in its own right, with top players acknowledging that one-minute chess tests a different but equally serious set of skills.

Nihal’s title run was dominant from the losers bracket onward. He defeated Andrew Tang 11-6 , then beat compatriot Arjun Erigaisi 13.5-7.5 to earn another shot at Firouzja. The match against Arjun was closer than the final score suggested in the early and middle stages, but Nihal pulled away sharply towards the end, showing why he has long been considered one of the fastest and most resourceful bullet players in the world.

The final, however, was the defining statement. Firouzja had earlier beaten Nihal 12.5-9.5 in the winners bracket and looked on course to defend his crown. But the rematch was entirely different. Nihal returned with greater control, sharper clock handling and relentless consistency. Once he gained momentum, Firouzja, usually the player who suffocates others in bullet, found himself unable to stop the surge.

For Indian chess, this is a landmark result. The country has already become a global force in classical, rapid and blitz chess through players such as Gukesh, Praggnanandhaa, Arjun Erigaisi and Nihal himself. But this title gives India a breakthrough in the fastest major online format as well.

Nihal’s win was not a narrow upset. It was a statement of supremacy over the reigning champion. In the most unforgiving format in chess, against one of its greatest specialists, he was faster, calmer and more ruthless.

The result confirms what online chess followers have known for years: Nihal Sarin is not just an Indian prodigy or a strong grandmaster. He is now the Bullet Chess Champion.
