Nine persons , including seven juveniles , have been arrested for allegedly sexually harassing a 14-year-old girl in the Palakkarai area, police said on Sunday.

The case came to light after the girl's mother noticed significant behavioural changes and took her for counselling. During the counselling sessions, the minor reportedly disclosed that she had been subjected to sexual harassment over a period of time. Acting on the revelation, the mother approached the Fort All Women Police Station (AWPS) and lodged a formal complaint.

Following the complaint, a special police team launched an investigation and arrested nine individuals allegedly involved in the abuse. Police said seven of the accused are minors, while the remaining two are adults.

A case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and other applicable laws. The two adult accused have been remanded in judicial custody , while proceedings against the juveniles are being carried out under the Juvenile Justice Act. Further investigation is underway.

The incident has once again highlighted concerns over child safety and the persistent threat of sexual crimes against minors . Experts note that many cases remain unreported due to fear, social stigma, or the inability of children to articulate their experiences. Counselling and early intervention by parents, teachers, and caregivers often play a crucial role in identifying abuse and ensuring timely action.

The case has also drawn attention to gaps in preventive mechanisms , including inadequate awareness programmes, limited child protection monitoring, and the need for stronger community-based safeguards. Child rights advocates have called for enhanced safety education , improved reporting systems, and greater vigilance to protect children from exploitation and abuse.

Authorities have urged parents and guardians to remain attentive to behavioural changes in children and to promptly seek professional assistance or report concerns to law enforcement agencies.
