Meghalaya is set for a major infrastructure push with the launch of six road projects worth Rs 3,214 crore , including four new national highway projects and the upgradation of two existing highway stretches, aimed at transforming connectivity across the state.

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari is attending the foundation-stone-laying ceremony during the North East India Infrastructure Summit & Exhibition (NEIINFRA) 2026 in New Shillong. The two-day summit has brought together policymakers, investors, industry leaders, financial institutions and infrastructure experts from across the Northeast to explore investment and development opportunities.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma described the projects as a significant milestone for Meghalaya’s development and prosperity. He said the initiative would strengthen transport networks, reduce travel time and improve access to remote regions of the state.

The projects include the 7.76-km Pynursla Bypass on NH-206 at a cost of Rs 564 crore, the 31.5-km Dhubri-Phulbari Bridge-Selsella Road on NH-127B worth Rs 737 crore, the 31.7-km Selsella-Goeragre Road on NH-206 costing Rs 504 crore, and the 29-km Tura Bypass on NH-217, estimated at Rs 951 crore. The Tura project is expected to ease congestion, improve road safety and enhance connectivity in the Garo Hills region.

In addition, a 10.67-km stretch of the Shillong-Dawki Road will be upgraded at Rs 351 crore, while a 5.44-km section of the Jowai Bypass will be improved at a cost of Rs 106 crore.

Officials said the projects form part of the Centre’s broader strategy to strengthen Northeast connectivity , facilitate trade and tourism, improve logistics, and support long-term economic growth across Meghalaya and the wider region.
