India have suffered a setback ahead of their white-ball tour of the United Kingdom, with all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy being ruled out of the upcoming T20I series against Ireland due to a left quadriceps injury sustained during the recent ODI series against Afghanistan.

According to a medical bulletin accessed by PTI, an MRI scan revealed swelling and fibre disruption in Reddy's left quadriceps , indicating a muscle injury more serious than initially anticipated. The 23-year-old has been directed to report to the BCCI Centre of Excellence (COE) for further assessment and rehabilitation.

The injury is expected to keep Reddy out of action for a minimum of four weeks , though the recovery timeline could extend further depending on his progress. He will also need to successfully complete the Return To Play (RTP) protocols before being cleared for competitive cricket. As a result, he is likely to miss not only the Ireland T20Is but also a significant portion, if not all, of the subsequent white-ball matches in England.

Reddy's absence comes at a challenging time for India, as he was expected to help fill the gap left by Hardik Pandya , who is managing a quadriceps niggle and is currently not in a position to bowl a full quota of overs in ODIs.

The Andhra Pradesh all-rounder featured in two matches during the Afghanistan ODI series but missed the second game in Lucknow because of discomfort in his left thigh. While bowling coach Morne Morkel had initially suggested that the issue did not appear serious, subsequent MRI scans revealed swelling and fibre disruption in the left quadriceps , indicating damage to the muscle fibres at the front of the thigh. Such injuries are commonly caused by the repeated strain of sprinting, sudden acceleration, braking movements and the explosive actions involved in fast bowling.

Reddy has represented India in 10 Tests, six ODIs and four T20Is . His absence deprives the team of a valuable pace-bowling all-round option as it prepares for a demanding overseas assignment.
