No Haaland, No Problem? Norway Chooses Long Term World Cup Dream Over Group Glory
Norway made one of the boldest tactical decisions of the FIFA World Cup so far by resting star striker Erling Haaland along with nine other regular starters against France , choosing to prioritise the knockout rounds over a battle for the top spot in the group.
The gamble came at a cost as France registered a commanding 4-1 victory, powered by a sensational first half hat trick from Ousmane Dembélé , to finish at the top of the group. However, Norway's camp remained convinced that preserving the fitness of key players was the smarter move with the knockout stage just around the corner.
Head coach Ståle Solbakken defended the decision without hesitation, saying the team's objective was never to win the group at any cost but to remain competitive for as long as possible in the tournament. With only a short turnaround after the previous match against Senegal, Norway opted to rotate heavily instead of risking fatigue or injuries to its biggest names.
"The fans would have loved to see Erling, but our responsibility is to make decisions that give us the best chance of staying in the tournament," Solbakken explained after the match.
Norway entered the contest already assured of a place in the Round of 32 but needed a victory over France to leapfrog them into first place because of an inferior goal difference. Instead, the defeat confirmed Norway's second place finish and set up a knockout clash against Ivory Coast on Tuesday in Arlington, Texas.
Despite fielding a much changed lineup, the Norwegian coaching staff viewed the match as an opportunity for squad players to gain valuable experience against one of the world's strongest teams. Goalkeeper Egil Selvik replaced regular starter Orjan Nyland , while several fringe players were handed rare starts.
Midfielder Patrick Berg backed the coach's strategy, describing it as beneficial for both the first choice players and those waiting patiently for their opportunity. He said resting regulars during what Norway hopes will be a long World Cup campaign could prove invaluable in the decisive stages.
Meanwhile, France made full use of Norway's weakened lineup. Dembélé's brilliant hat trick put the match beyond doubt before halftime as the former world champions secured first place in the group and booked a Round of 32 meeting with one of the tournament's third placed teams.
French defender Jules Koundé admitted he was surprised by Norway's extensive changes but insisted his team remained fully focused regardless of the opposition's selection.
For many Norwegian supporters who travelled thousands of kilometres to the United States, the absence of Haaland was disappointing. The Manchester City striker arrived at the tournament as one of football's biggest attractions and had already scored four goals, placing him among the leading scorers alongside Vinícius Júnior and Kylian Mbappé , behind only Lionel Messi .
Yet Solbakken believes the fans' ultimate reward would be seeing Norway continue deep into the competition rather than watching their biggest star in a single group stage fixture. Whether the calculated gamble pays off will become clear when Norway begins its knockout campaign against Ivory Coast, where a refreshed Haaland is expected to lead the attack.
