Veteran Indian squash player Joshna Chinappa is set to create history at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026 , becoming the first Indian athlete to feature in seven consecutive Asian Games . The 39-year-old will once again lead India’s squash challenge, marking a remarkable milestone in a career spanning more than two decades.

The Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games , scheduled to be held in Japan from September 19 to October 4, 2026 , will provide the stage for Joshna’s record-breaking appearance.

Joshna’s selection came after trials conducted at the ISTA Academy in Chennai , where the Indian squad was finalised. She is expected to compete in the doubles event, continuing her long-standing association with India’s Asian Games campaigns.

Her journey at the continental multi-sport event began at Busan 2002 , and since then she has represented India at every edition of the Games Doha 2006, Guangzhou 2010, Incheon 2014, Jakarta-Palembang 2018, Hangzhou 2023 , and now Aichi-Nagoya 2026 . Over the years, she has established herself as one of India’s most consistent performers on the international stage.

Joshna has won five Asian Games medals, two silver and three bronze . Four of those medals came in team events, including a bronze at Hangzhou, while the other was an individual bronze in the women’s singles competition at Jakarta 2018 .

Reacting to the milestone, Joshna expressed surprise and gratitude. “Oh yes, I never knew that! I always felt athletes like PT Usha or Leander Paes would have achieved something like this. I am more than happy,” she said.

She also acknowledged Indian sporting icons such as Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna , whose longevity has inspired generations of athletes.

Despite the historic achievement, Joshna remains focused on helping India secure medals in Japan. “There are many youngsters in the side and I am sure we can make it to the podium,” she said.

The squad includes rising star Anahat Singh , whom Joshna described as a key asset. “Having Anahat in the side adds impetus to the team because she has been in very good form recently. It is a very well-balanced side,” she said.

India enjoyed a successful campaign at Hangzhou 2023 , winning five squash medals, including two gold medals , and Joshna believes the current team has the quality to challenge for honours once again.

She also highlighted the physical demands of the multi-sport event, where athletes often have to play several matches in a short period. “It is a tough task but we are training for that. I hope to give my best,” she said.

The upcoming Games carry added significance for squash, which is set to make its Olympic debut at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics . While welcoming the development, Joshna said her focus remains firmly on the present.

“Two years is a long period. At this stage, I look one month ahead and not years. But I am happy that squash has finally made it to the Olympics,” she said.
