North Korean leader Kim Jong Un supervised major weapons tests and called for a "deadly and destructive offensive posture" to strengthen the country's military, state media reported on Friday, days after Pyongyang commissioned its first modern naval destroyer. The developments underscore Kim's continued push to expand both nuclear and conventional military capabilities amid stalled diplomacy with the United States and South Korea.

According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Thursday's tests evaluated a special mission warhead for a tactical ballistic missile, an upgraded multiple rocket launch system, and extended-range shells for a self-propelled gun-howitzer. Kim said the successful trials demonstrated advances in North Korea's firepower along the southern border, with the weapons capable of targeting airfields, ports, power facilities, and U.S. military bases in South Korea.

KCNA quoted Kim as saying North Korea's self-defence policy seeks to maintain an offensive posture that deters adversaries by creating "constant uneasiness and fear."

The weapons tests came just days after North Korea commissioned the 5,000-tonne destroyer Choe Hyon , the country's most advanced warship, which Kim described as a symbol of its growing naval and nuclear strength.

In response, South Korea announced plans to significantly expand its drone warfare capabilities by developing long-range exploding drones, acquiring more than 20,000 reconnaissance and attack drones , and training all 500,000 military personnel as "drone warriors." Seoul said the move reflects growing concerns over North Korea's military advancements and its alleged access to Russian military technology .

Kim has continued to reject denuclearisation demands as a condition for talks with Washington while strengthening ties with Russia and deepening diplomatic engagement with China .
