Meghalaya Chief Minister and National People's Party (NPP) president Conrad K. Sangma has strongly condemned the killing of six Naga civilians in Manipur , describing the incident as a "senseless act of violence" and calling for those responsible to be brought to justice.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Sangma said the killings were "deeply disturbing and wholly unacceptable" and expressed solidarity with the bereaved families. He stressed that there could be no justification for the killing of innocent civilians and urged all parties to exercise restraint.

The condemnation came after Manipur Police recovered the mortal remains of six persons believed to be among the Naga men who were abducted by armed groups from Leilon Vaiphei village in Kangpokpi district on May 13. The bodies were found following an extensive search operation involving police, central forces and forensic teams.

Sangma noted that the tragedy was particularly painful as it occurred despite efforts by the United Naga Council (UNC) to foster dialogue, reconciliation and peaceful engagement among communities. He said a gesture intended to build trust had instead been met with violence, resulting in immense suffering for the victims' families and communities.

Calling for accountability, the NPP chief urged authorities to ensure that those behind the killings are identified and punished . He emphasized that lasting peace can only be achieved through dialogue and peaceful resolution of differences .

The recovery of the bodies came a day after 14 Kuki individuals abducted in Manipur's Senapati district were released , highlighting the continuing security challenges in the conflict-hit state.
