The United States has marked a significant milestone in its efforts to revive nuclear energy, with an advanced microreactor developed by Antares Nuclear Inc. successfully reaching "criticality" at the Idaho National Laboratory . The achievement represents a crucial step toward bringing a new generation of compact nuclear reactors into practical use and underscores Washington's growing focus on expanding domestic energy production.

Criticality is the stage at which a reactor achieves a self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction , enabling it to generate a steady flow of energy. According to the US Department of Energy , Antares has become the first private company to reach this milestone under a federal pilot programme designed to accelerate the development of advanced nuclear technologies.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright described the development as a landmark moment in what he called an "American nuclear renaissance." The reactor's success comes amid a broader push by the administration to reduce regulatory hurdles and speed up approvals for advanced nuclear projects , which are increasingly viewed as a potential source of reliable, carbon-free electricity .

Unlike conventional nuclear power plants, microreactors are designed to be smaller, more flexible and easier to deploy. Antares is initially targeting military installations and remote locations where dependable energy supplies are critical. The company expects the reactor to begin producing electricity by late 2027 , with field deployment planned for 2028 .

Supporters argue that advanced reactors could strengthen energy security , lower long-term power costs and help meet rising electricity demand driven by industry and emerging technologies. The federal government has already selected 11 advanced reactor projects for accelerated development as part of its long-term energy strategy.

However, critics remain cautious. Nuclear safety experts and advocacy groups have questioned whether microreactors can prove commercially viable and operate safely at scale. They argue that reaching criticality, while important, is only an early step in a lengthy process that requires extensive testing and regulatory review before widespread deployment.

Even so, the breakthrough is being viewed as a notable advance for the American nuclear sector , highlighting renewed momentum behind technologies that many policymakers believe could play a key role in the future energy mix .
