Omar Abdullah Opens Asia’s Largest Tulip Garden, Tourism Revival in Focus
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday inaugurated Asia's largest tulip garden on the banks of Dal Lake, opening it nearly 10 days ahead of schedule due to warmer-than-usual weather . The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden , located on Cheshma Shahi Road, now displays over 1.8 million bulbs across more than 70 varieties , with increased density for a richer visual impact.
Accompanied by his Cabinet colleagues and National Conference MLAs , Abdullah said the early opening marks a fresh start for the tourism sector , which faced significant setbacks last year after the Pahalgam terror attack that resulted in temporary closures of 44 tourist destinations. "The situation keeps changing, and we hope that conditions improve to allow people from outside to enjoy the beauty of Jammu and Kashmir ," he told reporters.
Abdullah highlighted ongoing efforts to develop floriculture as a commercial venture , including initiatives to grow tulip bulbs locally , reducing reliance on imports from the Netherlands and saving foreign exchange . He added that once a reliable cold chain is established via rail or air the flower trade could bloom economically , generating employment and boosting exports.
The Chief Minister also emphasised security measures at tourist sites, assuring that personnel will make their presence felt across destinations to maintain visitor confidence. Cultural events have been planned at the garden to enhance the tourist experience, signalling a push for year-round, diversified tourism .
Experts note that early blooming, caused by Kashmir’s hottest February in decades , reflects shifts in local climate patterns , which could influence future tourism and horticultural planning. The garden’s expansion since its addition in 2008 from a modest attraction to a major tourism and floriculture hub demonstrates the region’s potential for sustainable economic growth.
On the opening day, a large number of tourists and locals were seen waiting to enter, reflecting strong public interest. With continued improvements in infrastructure, climate adaptation, and marketing , the state aims for a steady recovery and sustainable growth of its tourism sector in the coming years.
