One person was killed and four others sustained injuries after an old explosive object detonated in the upper reaches of Gulmarg in north Kashmir's Baramulla district on Saturday, officials said.

The explosion occurred near Asha Post, Sumli Wali Dhok , a remote area in the Gulmarg region. The deceased was identified as Zubair Ahmad Bajjad , a resident of Lateefabad Khudpora village in the Chandoosa area of Baramulla.

According to police, the incident was reported around 3 pm , following which police and security personnel rushed to the scene. Preliminary investigations indicate that the victim accidentally came into contact with an old unexploded explosive object , which triggered the fatal blast.

While Zubair Ahmad Bajjad died on the spot, four others who were present at the location suffered injuries and were shifted for medical treatment. Their condition was not immediately disclosed.

A police spokesperson said inquest proceedings have been initiated, and forensic experts have examined the blast site to gather evidence. Authorities have also launched a detailed investigation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the explosion.

As a precautionary measure, specialist bomb disposal and security teams are carrying out an extensive sanitisation operation in the area to detect and safely dispose of any additional unexploded explosive material that may still be present.

Officials said the investigation is ongoing, and further details are expected as the inquiry progresses.
