In a major push towards affordable housing, the Telangana government is set to launch a massive urban housing programme with plans to invite tenders shortly for the construction of one lakh Indiramma houses across Hyderabad’s rapidly expanding CURE (Core Urban Region Expansion) area .

Announcing the initiative, Revenue, Housing and Information & Public Relations Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy said the project would be taken up under the guidance of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and would cover key urban constituencies falling under Kukatpally, Serilingampally and Quthbullapur regions. He stated that the process of identifying and securing land for the project is in its final stages and is expected to be completed within the next few days.

The proposed housing programme will begin as a pilot project in 19 Assembly constituencies within the urban region. In the first phase, the government plans to construct between 500 and 1,000 houses in each constituency , with additional phases aimed at covering all eligible beneficiaries. Officials say the initiative is designed to address the growing demand for affordable housing in Hyderabad's urban periphery while ensuring that low-income families are not displaced from their existing communities.

A key feature of the programme is the government's decision to build homes within the beneficiaries' own constituencies , rather than relocating them to distant locations on the city's outskirts. Despite urban land values in some pockets ranging from ₹100 crore to ₹200 crore per acre , the government has chosen to prioritize social welfare over commercial considerations. Beneficiaries will receive legal ownership rights, with the houses expected to be developed in a multi-storey housing model to make efficient use of scarce urban land.

The project forms part of the broader Indiramma Housing Scheme , one of the flagship welfare programmes of the Congress government. The State has already sanctioned thousands of houses in rural constituencies, and the urban expansion is expected to significantly increase the scheme's reach.

Speaking at a programme in Goshamahal , where property documents were distributed to beneficiaries of completed double-bedroom houses, Ponguleti said the government had also finished 125 housing units in Dhoolpet that had remained incomplete for years. He added that district authorities have been directed to identify additional land parcels for future housing projects.

The minister also took aim at the opposition, asserting that the Congress government would deliver more houses during its tenure than were constructed during the previous BRS administration's decade-long rule . Reaffirming the government's commitment to housing security, he said the ultimate objective is to ensure “a home for every poor family” and move Telangana closer to the vision of a “hut-free Telangana” through sustained investment in affordable housing and urban welfare infrastructure.
