One Round To Go: Two Winless Stars Battle For A Dream LPGA Breakthrough
Sophia Schubert and Arpichaya Yubol will head into the final round of the Standard Portland Classic tied at the top after producing contrasting but equally impressive performances on Saturday.
Schubert fired a 5-under 67, closing her round with birdies on two of her final three holes, while second-round leader Yubol carded a 4-under 68. The pair reached 16-under 200 after 54 holes at the tree-lined Columbia Edgewater Country Club, setting up a gripping final-round battle for their first LPGA Tour title.
Both players are seeking their maiden victory on the tour, adding further intrigue to Sunday's finale.
For Schubert, the position marks a remarkable return to the LPGA Tour. The 30-year-old American finished 10th in the Epson Tour standings last year to earn her way back to the big stage. The 2017 U.S. Women's Amateur champion is currently ranked 295th in the world and 125th in the LPGA season points race.
Schubert's confidence has grown during her time on the Epson Tour, where she said the experience of competing regularly and being around winning situations gave her a valuable boost.
Yubol, meanwhile, has already shown she can contend at the highest level. The 24-year-old Thai is ranked 112th in the world and sits 28th in the season standings. She has twice finished runner-up this year, at Mayakoba and the ShopRite LPGA Classic, and will now have another opportunity to claim her first LPGA crown.
Yubol briefly moved to 17 under after birdies on the first two holes of the back nine but was unable to extend her advantage. She made six straight pars before dropping a shot at the 15th.
Schubert responded strongly after a bogey at the 14th, birdieing the 16th and finishing with another birdie at the 18th to pull level.
Just two shots behind the leaders is fellow Thai star Jeeno Thitikul, who shot a 5-under 67 to reach 14-under 202. The 23-year-old will join Schubert and Yubol in the final group as she bids for her 10th LPGA Tour victory.
Narin An is another player in contention at 13 under after a 66, leaving the tournament perfectly poised for an exciting finish.
