One year after one of the darkest chapters in Indian aviation history, Air India employees across India and overseas locations will observe a two minute silence on Friday in memory of those who lost their lives in the AI171 air crash on June 12, 2025.

According to an internal communication issued by the airline, employees have been requested to observe silence from 1:39 pm to 1:41 pm (IST) as a mark of respect and remembrance for the victims of the tragedy that shook the aviation industry and left families across multiple countries grieving.

The airline clarified that staff members may observe the tribute from their respective workstations, while employees handling essential airport operations, check in services, ground support and active flight duties may continue their responsibilities uninterrupted.

Apart from the workplace observance, Air India has also planned commemorative gatherings at designated locations including its headquarters, training academy, Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, London Heathrow and London Gatwick airports , where employees will collectively pay tribute to those who died.

The memorial comes exactly one year after Air India flight AI171 , operated using a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner (VT ANB) and flying from India to London Gatwick , crashed moments after takeoff during its initial climb.

The accident claimed 241 lives onboard and 19 lives on the ground , making it one of the most devastating aviation disasters in recent memory. Only one passenger survived the crash, while all 12 crew members lost their lives. Among those who died were passengers from India, the United Kingdom, Portugal and Canada .

As remembrance ceremonies take place, attention also remains on the official investigation into the disaster. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) continues to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash, with an interim report or further update expected in the near future.

For Air India and the families affected, the anniversary serves not only as a day of mourning, but also as a moment to remember the lives lost and reflect on lessons that continue to shape aviation safety.
